Wolcottville High School’s oldest alumni passes away

Wolcottville High School’s oldest alumni, Virginia (Eagles) Umberger, died October 30, 2017 at the age of 108.

She was born May 28, 1909, near Wilmette, Ill., to Albert and Clara Eagles.

Moving with her family to Wolcottville at the age of 11, her father opened a dentist office there. He later had an apple orchard west of Wolcottville on the county line.

Virginia was a 1927 graduate of Wolcottville High School and went on to graduate from Northwestern University, Phi Beta Kappa. After college graduation, she worked at the Merchandise Mart in Chicago, Ill., where she met her future husband, Alton Umberger. She was active in the First Methodist Church in Elgin, Ill., Great Books course, sewing, cooking, travel and gardening, especially cultivating, cleaning and curing gourds for a variety of uses. She also presented programs and workshops on wreathmaking.

She was featured extensively in newspaper and magazine articles not only for her many accomplishments but also her philosophy on nature and life.

She is survived by her daughter, Nancy (John) Rascher, two grandsons, and four great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held November 21 in Dundee, Ill.
