Westview runners finish third at state finals

When Les Hively took over the Westview boys cross country team a decade ago, the once powerful Warrior program had fallen on hard times, scrambling to even field a full squad during some seasons.

So it was understandable that Hively could barely hold back his joy Saturday in Terre Haute, as he watched his Warrior harriers battled against schools many times larger than theirs to finish third in the IHSAA state finals meet. The result was the best ever for a Westview team in the 72years of the event.

The Warriors totaled 171 points, 29 less than the score of 200 posted by fourth-place Valparaiso. Carmel won the team championship with a mark of 94. Fishers was second with 152.

“I am just so happy for our kids and the Westview community whose support was off the charts,” said Hively. “This group of five seniors has stuck with the sport since their junior high days and have developed such a tight bond. I knew something like today was possible.”

Two of those upperclassmen are Richmond Stoltzfus and Matthew Yoder, who again led the Warrior pack. Stoltzfus duplicated his ninth-place effort of a year ago in the state finals race, this time finishing in a time of 15:39.3.

“I’ve always ran well here and today I just had it again,” said Stoltzfus, who is considering Bradley, Butler and Indiana for his collegiate running career. “Medaling individually again is great, but to have the rest of the team getting a chance to stand up on the awards podium really makes it special.”

Yoder, who in the month leading up to the state meet had earned medalist honors in the NECC, sectional, regional and semi-state races, settled for 12th place Saturday with a clocking of 15:43.6. Yoder placed 14th in last year’s state finals.

“I ran pretty average today but my teammates picked me up and I couldn’t be happier that we got third as a team,” stated Yoder, who is being recruited by Indiana and Indiana State, among others. “Our goal before the season was to finish in the top-five (in the state) and to accomplish that against the bigger schools down here is really something.”

A pair of freshmen, Spencer and Remington Carpenter, followed Yoder across the finish line for the Warriors. Spencer placed 56th overall in 16:18.4 and Remington finished 88th in 16:31.1.

Senior Abe Jones rounded out the Warrior scoring lineup with a 102nd-place effort of 16:36.7. Junior Kent Yoder (104th in 16:36.9) and sophomore Anthony Schwartz (153rd in 17:05.1) completed the Westview contingent.

Gabe Fendel of Hamilton Southeastern took home the boys individual state title with a run of 15:17.2. Cole Hocker of Indianapolis Cathedral was a close second in 15:19.5. Skylar Stidam of Christian Academy took third in 15:23.8.

Connor Goetz of Carroll (Allen) was named the winner of the Charles F. Maas Mental Attitude Award.
