Westview boys trounce Churubusco

A minute into the second half of last Friday’s NECC boys basketball game in Emma between Westview and Churubusco, the visiting Eagles were giving the host Warriors all they could handle.

Trailing by a point (25-24) at the intermission, Busco tied the count at 27-all when Zane Burke buried a three-point shot. It had been Burke’s 16 first-half points which had kept the Eagles within striking distance.

Then a bomb named Charlie Yoder went off.

The Warrior sophomore, who netted just four markers during the opening two stanzas, exploded for 33 points in the final two. The stunned Eagles never had a chance, as Westview steamed to an 86-50 victory.

Yoder tallied 17 points in the third period, part of a 29-6 Warrior burst. The 6-4 guard sank 16 points in the final frame to cap off his career-high, 37-point effort.

Feeding Yoder most of the night was Elijah Hales, who racked up 16 of Westview’s 25 assists. The 6-4 junior also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and scored five points.

Joining Yoder in double figures were junior Nick Rensberger and senior Sam Sharp with 15 and 12 points, respectively. Rensberger added seven boards to his ledger.

Burke finished with 27 points and seven rebounds to pace Churubusco in both categories. Gage Kelly put in a dozen points for the 0-3 Eagles.

The win improved Westview to 3-0 overall and to 1-0 in the NECC.
