Shipshewana sets sewer connection fee for campground

The Shipshewana Town Council passed a recommendation on how much to charge the Shipshewana RV Park, which is part of the Shipshewana Flea Market, to hook into the town’s sewer system.

The campground is adding 94 camping sites that will need to be hooked into the town’s collection system.

The council was told that the town charges a $1,250 connection fee per EDU (Equivalent Daily Usage), which is the average amount of wastewater created by a typical single-family dwelling. As the campground is only used for half of a year and does not produce as much waste as a full household, the town calculated that the 94 campsites would be equal to 15.15 EDUs.

The town then passed a motion to charge the campground $1,250 per EDU for the one-time connection fee.

The council was told that the town’s assessed value was up by 8 percent, which will have the effect of lowering the overall tax rate on the town’s portion of the property tax.

During the February 22 meeting, Fire Chief Chad Miller will be on hand to give public notice that the department is seeking a USDA grant for equipment for the department’s new fire truck.
