LaGrange County Parks news


LaGrange County offices will be closed December 25 and 26 for Christmas.

LaGrange County offices will also be closed January 1 for New Year’s.

Maple Wood Nature Center will be closed December 23-January 1 for winter break.

December Skywatch…

Winter skies provide great opportunity for observing stars and planets.

Geminids Meteor Shower is possible December 7-17. The meteors are debris left over from a comet named 3200 Phatheon. Peak is December 13 with a respectable show possible December 14.

Mars is the brightest it will be all winter. It is the closest on December 18 and in opposition December 24. These dates and in-between make for prime viewing. Viewers may even get to see the ice caps.

A new moon is December 18.

Ursids Meteor Shower is December 17-25, with the peak December 21-22. This is a minor shower expecting 5-10 meteors per hour.

Breakfast with the Birds…

Breakfast with the Birds on Wednesday, Dec. 20, will at 8:30 a.m. This month’s topic is Yule Log.

Is a Yule Log part of your Christmas? Maybe it should be. Yule logs have been a winter celebration tradition longer than even stories can remember. There is lots of meaning to be found. It was a lifeless stem from outside brought inside to light the way to a new year.

Breakfast with the Birds is for anyone who is free a Wednesday morning of each month. The program starts with coffee and doughnuts, then a talk or discussion is offered by a naturalist. Bring binoculars and enjoy a hike in the woods afterward. A donation of $2 to support the program is recommended.

Folk Jam…                

Folk Music Jam sessions are hosted the fourth Sunday of each month. Jams are mostly folk, country and bluegrass music with other styles thrown in from time to time.

This month’s jam will be from 1:30-5 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 23. There will be no interpretive services on December 23.
