Girls State Track results

Lakeland senior Kloee Fitch brought home a fifth-place medal in the discus event from the 44th annual IHSAA girls track and field state finals meet held this past Saturday at Indiana University in Bloomington.

Fitch flung the iron sphere a distance of 131-9 feet, nearly three feet farther than sixth-place finisher Haley Nichols of Avon (129-0). Essence Henderson of Lafayette Jeff took the discus gold medal for the second consecutive year with a throw of 158-1.

Fitch, who will throw for the University of Maine next year, also took part in the shot put competition at the state finals. Her top toss of 38-0.25 feet was good enough for 21st place.

Saturday marked the fourth straight year in which Fitch made it to the medal stand at the state finals. As a freshman, the Lady Laker standout placed seventh in the discus. She was the state runner-up in the discus as a sophomore and placed third in the discus and sixth in the shot put in her junior campaign.

The only other LaGrange County athlete to compete at the state finals Saturday was Westview’s Aleka Ernsberger. The freshman ran a time of 57.64 in her heat of the 400-meter dash, placing her 11th overall.

Angola distance whiz Josey Korte finished second in the 1600-meter run with a time of 4:57.69. East Noble’s Lexie Moriarity placed sixth in the long jump with a distance of 17-9.5 feet.

Warren Central won the girls state finals team title with 55 points. Hamilton Southeastern was second with 46.
