Girls cross country state finals results

Defending girls cross country state champion Tyler Schwartz of DeKalb had to settle for third place in Saturday’s IHSAA finals meet in Terre Haute.

The Lady Baron senior completed the Lavern Gibson layout in a time of 18:07.9, nearly a second quicker than her winning clocking a year ago. Finishing above Schwartz Saturday were race winner Emma Watson (17:45.9) of Greencastle and runner-up Phoebe Bates (18:00.0) of Carmel.

East Noble junior Kayla McCulloch ran to a fifth-place finish in a time of 18:17.3. Other area runners cracking the top 20 included DeKalb’s Lauren Beckmann (15th in 18:29.1) and Elkhart Memorial’s Morgan Dyer (19th in 18:33.1).

Zionsville won its first-ever girls cross country state championship with a score of 118 points. Carroll (Allen) was second with 129 and seven-time defending team champ Carmel had to settle for third with 169.

Katherine Modrell of Indianapolis Brebeuf was named the winner of the girls mental attitude award.
