Dr. Benson takes superintendent post at Howe Academy

The Board of Trustees of Howe Military Academy have announced that Dr. James H. Benson has agreed to accept the position of superintendent at the Howe Military Academy. The board, in recognition of the academy’s long history and prominence as a member of the Association of Military Colleges and Schools of the United States (AMCSUS), is excited about welcoming Dr. Benson into the Howe community.

Dr. Benson began his career as a teacher and football and baseball coach in his home town of Roanoke, Virg. Subsequently, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps, initially serving as an infantry platoon and company commander in Quang Nam Province, South Vietnam.

He is a decorated Marine who served 26 years in a variety of command and staff billets. In 1995, Colonel Benson retired to become the executive assistant to the president/director of planning and later the vice president for administration at Bridgewater College in Bridgewater, Virg.

In 2004, he was selected as the 15th president of Marion Military Institute, a two-year college and preparatory school in Marion, Ala. After considerable success, he was recruited to be the 8th president of Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville, Ga., where he enjoyed similar success until he retired and opened a consulting firm, J.H. Benson Turnarounds and Recoveries, LLC, in 2016.

Dr. Benson has a Bachelor’s degree from Bridgewater College, a Master of Science Degree from the University of Tennessee, a Master of Public Administration degree from the Pennsylvania State University, and a doctorate in higher education administration from George Washington University. He is also a graduate of the Armed Forces Staff College in Norfolk, Virg., and the Army War College in Carlisle, Penn.

Dr. Benson is the author of So You Want to Be a Leader? Advice and Counsel for Young Leaders, second edition published in 2013. He is also the author of Executive Courage – Sometimes You Have to Walk Point to be published by Next Century Publishing in the winter of 2018.

Dr. Benson is an experienced and successful educator, businessman, and leader who is expected to bring new initiatives and enthusiasm to Howe. His complete biography can be found at
